Early Orientation - takes place any time during your student's 4th or 7th grade year

7th Grade Orientation for High School
This service provides a detailed orientation around the application process, defining the different stages, reviewing where your child currently stands as a candidate and if there is anything necessary to do in the coming year. This also includes an in-depth discussion of the different school options and serves as preliminary preparation for the process. This is a parent only meeting as we do not want students worrying about the process too early, but it is a chance to put parents' minds at ease about what lies ahead.
Time: 1-2 hours
Standard Orientation - takes place August, September or October of your student's 5th or 8th grade year

This service provides a detailed orientation around the application process, defining the different stages, and reviewing where your child currently stands as a candidate. We will organize the process, set up a timeline, and discuss preparation steps for the process. This also includes an in-depth discussion of the different schools that you might be considering and others that we suggeset for you. Our expertise in this area allows you to get a very good feel for the direction you can take. This meeting involves both the parents and the student with get-to-know you exercises to lay the groundwork for the applications. At the end of this meeting, you will have a smart initial school list for applications and a lot of comfort in how we will approach the process.
Time: 1-2 hours
School Visit Preparation - September and October of your student's 5th or 8th grade year
This meeting involves both parents and students and serves to check in on school choice, testing preparation and counseling for school visits. It includes vital information to make sure you are completely prepared for Open House visits, "Shadow Visits," and student and parent interviews.
Time: 1 hour
Essay Preview and Review - October, November and December of 5th or 8th grade
In this service, we work very hard to let the voice of your student and family come through in the application and guide, not over-edit. We have an initial discussion of the essay questions (both student essays and parent essays) and how we can best present your student and family to the school. We also talk about what the different schools are trying to understand about your family. It includes an initial review of the rough drafts with comments and guidance. With our experience on both sides of the admissions desk, we can offer invaluable advice on your essays. We have also found that posing certain questions and having fun conversations around the essay topic can help students (who might not be used to writing about themselves) write phenomenal essays.
Time: Varies depending on the number of schools to which you are applying.
Additional Essay Review - November, December and January of 5th or 8th grade
We can review as many essays as necessary either in person or through email. $200/hour.
From Dec 23 - Jan 10: Fees go up due to the volume of work as deadlines approach. $300/hour.
* We can meet you at your home, a library, a coffee shop or we can meet at Mary's home in San Mateo, CA.
